Giant Balloons for Thanksgiving Events

Giant balloons have been a Thanksgiving tradition since at least 1927 when Macy’s incorporated the giant balloons in their annual Thanksgiving Day Parade.
According to a press release on PR Newswire dated November 17, 2009 60 of the theater students from Stagedoor Manor will perform a new finale at this, the 83rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Stagedoor Manor, according to the PR Newswire release, is a total immersion summer theater program located in upstate New York. Stagedoor has been educating performers since 1976; furthermore, all levels of talent and experience are able to attend.
The cast was chosen from a cast of over 400 students. The cast of 6o will come together just four days before the parade and spend long hours in rehearsal. The Stagedoor cast will join many celebrities, iconic floats, the famous giant balloons and elite marching bands in this worldfamous parade.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is attended by more than 3.5 million people on the streets of New York and viewed by more than 40 million watching on TV.
The giant balloons are manned by hundreds of volunteers and a few professional handlers. The giant helium balloons require thousands of cubic feet of helium and many hours to fill. The preparation begins very early in the morninga and eveyone prays for calm winds. Cold weather may be unpleasant for the performers but it’s the wind that concerns the handlers of the giant balloons.
Here’s hoping for soft winds and warm temperatures!

Giant Balloons and Five Alarm Funk

Giant balloons can be used to serve a vast array applications.
Maybe it was the Rolling Stones, I’m not sure, who began using giant balloons in their concerts. Whatever band it was really started something. We now have everything from giant flaming lips balloons to flying pigs to huge sphere balloons floating on stages.
A great example of this was reported at VernonMorningstar.com and the use of giant balloons this past week by the band Five Alarm Funk in their concert.
The balloons add a whole different dimension to concerts and helps involve the audience in the production. The audience can begin to gel as an entity onto its own.
Watch for more integration of giant balloons into concerts and stage productions as producers see the benefit that can occur from such simple devices as giant balloons.
